Cloud Energy Management Services
Services for monitoring, measurement and management the energy usage of all devices in your IT network.
magine, you can monitor, measure and manage the energy used by all the devices in your IT network. How much you can save, for example, if any server, router, switch, laptop, monitor, IP phone, wireless access point can be switched on and off based on their performance?
Stemo offers the Cisco Energy Management (CEM) network based solution for energy management, which doesn’t use agents and assists to optimize and reduce the energy consumption in an enterprise. Cisco Energy Management can help to improve the energy efficiency in data centers, the energy consumption management in a remote office environment and to automate the corporate reports. СЕМ reduces energy costs through monitoring, analysis and management the energy consumption and utilization of each IT device connected to the network regardless of device type or vendor. It helps you gain full visibility into the energy use of every device to improve energy efficiency and realize significant savings. СЕМ is a solution, providing a general view of the energy consumption of devices such as:
- Personal and Thin client computers;
- Physical and virtual servers;
- VoIP phones;
- Printers and copiers;
- Networking switches and routers;
- Power over Ethernet (PoE) switches;
- Heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, lighting systems;
- Data storage systems.
The Cisco Energy Management Suite delivers 100 percent visibility into the energy use of every device connected to the network, from distributed offices to the data center (Figure 1). It lets you offer your customers a more efficient way to use their resources and help them cut their energy use and costs by up to 35 percent. The Cisco Energy Management Suite empowers customers to measure use, adjust power to actual demand, and implement best practices for energy management and carbon footprint reduction across their organization. And they will start seeing savings in days, not weeks or months.
The Cisco Energy Management Suite contains four modules:
- Cisco Energy Management for Distributed Offices Provides continuous energy usage visibility, analytics, and policy-based energy management and helps you reduce IT energy costs throughout your distributed office environments. This software solution performs network-based monitoring of all IP-connected devices and systems, regardless of vendor. It includes PCs, Macs, IP phones, access points, printers, switches, routers, and more.
- Cisco Energy Management for Data Center. Provides continuous energy usage visibility, analytics, and policy-based energy management and helps you gain 100 percent visibility into data center energy usage. This software solution performs network-based monitoring of all devices and systems, regardless of vendor, including physical and virtual servers, routers, switches, power distribution units, storage devices, and more.
- Cisco Energy Management Optimization Service. Consists of a 12-month subscription service focused on optimizing energy usage for your IT infrastructure. It includes Cisco Energy Management Software, which allows centralized management across your network. Achieve 100 percent visibility into energy usage in the data center and across distributed offices.
- Cisco Energy Management as a Service. Use this software-as-a-service (SaaS) application to manage energy without hosting the Cisco Energy Management application in your data center. Reduce energy usage and gain complete visibility without having to purchase, provision, or maintain expensive servers. Pay as you grow, with convenient one-, three‑, or five-year subscriptions.
CEM System Architecture
Figure 1-1 illustrates the platform architecture. The core components include the central server and controllers. Each deployment requires a minimum of one controller connected to the central server. Larger deployments have multiple controllers deployed across different sites or locations, or even multiple controllers in the same location for large networks. The platform supports up to 50 concurrently active controllers per central server and a maximum of 25,000 assets per controller.

Central Server
The Central Server is the primary component in a distributed deployment, which has more than one controller. It hosts the central database for reporting and managing user and asset data, and it hosts the web server for the UI. Typical tasks include:
- Centralized asset and object database
- Centralized policy management
- Role-based access control
- Web Service interface
- Services for application
The following are its key components:
- Application Server: Receives, processes, and stores the asset data and updates from the controllers. Additionally, it triggers alerts and notifications to the external systems, such as the NOC systems.
- Processor: Provides the historical and real-time reports and helps in data collection and data aggregation.
- Database: Stores the asset data, reporting data, and policy and system configurations.
- Message Queue: Manages and distributes all of the incoming and outgoing messages between the application server and controllers.
- Web Server: Host files and resources for the UI and manages the service requests for the Web Service APIs.
СЕМ Controllers
Controllers are responsible for direct asset communication within the network, asset import, alert management, and policy control. The controllers are available within the customer network to enable communication with assets and asset management systems, which are directories with information about the assets that are within the network.
The primary function of a controller is to gather the sensor data, process it as asset data based on the defined policies and metrics, and forward the asset data to the application server for further processing and storage. Additionally, the controller modifies the asset characteristics and asset condition based on the defined policies, its processing of the sensor data, and the information that the controller receives from the application server.
Asset Connectors
Asset Connectors are a set of software tools that are used to discover and import asset data into the application with the help of the asset management systems. For example, an asset connector can import information that is related to all of the Windows computers from an asset management system, such as the Active Directory.
Asset Proxies
Asset Proxies are the communication protocol drivers that enable two-way communication between the assets within a network and the key components of the platform. The controller executes the asset proxies to retrieve data from the assets that were imported through the asset connectors.
Application UI
The UI is available for controller configuration and centralized management. You can gain access to the UI from any browser, but we recommend that you use the latest version of Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome for the best experience.
Note: The application supports up to 25 concurrently logged-in users.
API
The application offers Web Service-based APIs that are used by the external software tools to communicate and interact with the application.
